In Entities, the globe-creature hybrids combine found glass bottles with “studio glass.” The tension created between incompatibilities in the glass create cracks that extend—sometimes in one moment, sometimes over several months, sometimes months into the sculpture’s life in one moment. The balance between humyn and earth, at any moment threatening a divisive shift.
Glass is the only material of its kind – a non-crystalline amorphous solid, existing in a molecularly disorganized structure when hot. It has advanced our society in technology more than any other material. Many of the minerals I am interested in pigmenting glass with are becoming more expensive, as they are used in smartphone batteries. My work exemplifies the theory of entropy and the ways it exists in our lives. I believe there is an inherent sentimental quality to a piece shaped with breath and hand manifested in such a rigid substance. By letting temperature, gravity and mineral makeup dictate my forms, by relinquishing control, by simply making in a feminine body, I challenge precedents, as glassblowing was exclusively male for the majority of recorded history.
